Opening or recovering a personal Keepable tied to your identity requires a careful check. An accredited identity provider checks your NIN against NIMC records, and a liveness check confirms that you are present. Day to day, you use your passkey rather than entering the NIN again.

    When you open or recover the mailbox

    An accredited identity provider checks your NIN against NIMC records when you open or recover your Keepable. We do not retain the full number after verification. We keep a keyed one-way reference so we can recognise the same verified identity again. Your NIN is not a password and cannot sign you in or sign a document.

    Use a passkey day to day

    You sign in with a passkey on your device, unlocked by your face, fingerprint or device PIN. Keepable does not use a reusable password or an SMS one-time code for regular sign-in.

    Download your data or close your account

    Download your documents and available account data, or close your account. Some signed documents and audit records may be retained where the law requires it. The Privacy Notice explains the details and your rights under the NDPA.

The detail

What is the scrambled version, and why is it not just a hash?
A plain hash of an eleven-digit number could be tested against every possible value. Keepable instead creates the reference with a secret key held separately from the stored data. The stored reference alone cannot be reversed to reveal your NIN.
Why do you keep anything at all?
It lets Keepable recognise the same verified identity on a return visit and match an item addressed by NIN. The number used for the match is not returned to the sender or shown in the correspondence record.
What happens to my face?
It is used for a liveness check when you open or recover your Keepable, to confirm that the person completing the identity check is present. It is not kept as a day-to-day sign-in credential. Regular access uses the passkey on your device.
How do I know a page asking for my NIN is really Keepable?
You cannot know from a message, a logo or a request for information alone. Criminals can copy all three. Keepable will never ask you to send your NIN, face capture, passkey, password, BVN or OTP to staff in an email, WhatsApp message, social-media message, phone call or support conversation. If a message makes you unsure, stop and report it. A NIN check can protect your mailbox after it is complete; it cannot make an unsolicited message trustworthy.
How do I sign in, then?
With a passkey on your device, unlocked by your face, fingerprint or device PIN. There is no reusable Keepable password or SMS one-time code for regular sign-in. You can register more than one device, then see and remove those devices from your account.
Someone signed in and it was not me. What happens?
Review the devices on your account, remove any you do not recognise and sign out your sessions. Contact Keepable support if you think somebody else has accessed your account.
What can I take with me?
Download your documents and the account data available in the app. You can also ask for access, correction, deletion or portability where the NDPA provides that right. The Privacy Notice explains how to make a request and what may need to be retained.

The limit

This protects your Keepable, not every place where somebody might ask for a NIN. A NIN alone cannot enter, recover or sign from your mailbox, and we do not retain the full number after the check. A copied website can still ask for information, so requests outside Keepable should always be treated with care.
